Motivation gets you started, discipline is what keeps you going.
Some months ago, I was reading a great book named 5 AM Club, written by Robin Sharma, where he spoke about the importance of self-discipline to get what we want in our lives.
I felt inspired, so I committed myself to wake up for 66 consecutive days before sunrise.
How many morning people do you know?
I know more who haven’t seen the sunrise for ages.
Early mornings can be painful for the majority. This offers a perfect opportunity to see who has the self-discipline to overcome the discomfort. The same could be done, for example, with cold showers.

So why all this?
Firstly, I wanted to see how it feels to have one peaceful hour, with no distractions, that I can use to meditate, do yoga and journal about how I want my life to be.
And I got a few courageous friends who joined me, too.
Some days were easy…
Some days were more challenging… But those beautiful sunrises made me forget the first few seconds of pain when I heard my alarm going off.
More than this, it was about …
Working out the self-DISCIPLINE muscle
When the alarm goes off, we often feel tempted to turn it off and stay in bed.
Isn’t that amazing how fast our brains can be in making excuses?
In a split second, we hear the voice in our head telling us: “It’s too early… too cold outside… You will feel tired. Stay a little longer…”
Any type of DISCIPLINE requires breaking through short-term pain!

That’s when your self-discipline needs to kick in. Push through! You need to keep your goals in your sight and do it anyway.
You know how great it feels when you keep the words you gave to yourself.
Self-discipline is a muscle that grows the more we use it.

If we don’t train our self-discipline, we become weak
As we begin to chase our dreams, there will be many days when we won’t feel like it.
Those moments when we feel like giving up will come. There will be days when doubts will come as heavy clouds to test our commitment. We will feel like giving up as there will be many short-term pleasures in our way.
But you must stay strong and focus on the bigger picture, which is far more important.
Keep on going, keep on showing up.
What matters the most are the steps you take despite the negative chatter in your head. The commitment. Those words you gave to yourself!
Will you always choose the easy way and the path of least resistance?
Or will you stay committed and advance boldly even when things get hard? My page, The Greatest Wave of Life, aims to get more of you to pick the second option. 🙂
Are you with me?
In order to succeed, we need to discipline ourselves to consistently think long term.

I’m sure you do have dreams too. Maybe you haven’t pursued them because you don’t feel ready yet.
You know what?
You will never feel ready!
Your brain will always find thousands of excuses to keep you within your comfort zone.
Only true commitment will keep you going no matter the early alarm, cold outside or naysayers.
Grab a piece of paper and write down why your goal matters and how they positively influence your future and others around you.
Come back to it anytime you will be stacked.
